“WALANG HIYA”
To embrace your roots is to be in acknowledgement of the shame carried within your bones and having the courage to release it.
This mixed media installation was inspired by the Filipino concept of “hiya,” developed under post-colonial influence, which translates to “shame” and “embarrassment.” It challenges the individual’s relationship to shame and how it is carried generationally. WALANG HIYA offers a space to reflect on, accept, then release the shames that burden us.
